Feeding Rates

Hygain® Release® should be introduced to your horse’s diet gradually. Feeding amount may be influenced by age, breed, exercise intensity, desired body condition and climate.

Hygain® Release® is a highly palatable, digestible energy source. Care should be taken to match feed intake to workload. Reduce feed intake on rest days, if horses gain weight, and/or training regime is interrupted. Hygain® Release® is a complete feed and as such the addition of any other grains only serves to dilute the nutritional balance of the feed. Horses in full work on average will requre 7-14lbs of Hygain® Release® per day and between 9-13lbs of roughage per day. Do not feed additional selenium with Hygain® Release® without consulting a veterinarian.

What's Inside Release

The Australian Lupin is a legume (similar to beans, peas, and lentils) that is grown primarily in Australia and distributed worldwide. It is characterized by a high protein and fiber content, and is naturally low in starch. Lupins contain favorable amounts and ratios of essential fatty acids that provide calories for cool, focused energy. Rich in minerals such as zinc, magnesium, potassium, calcium, and phosphorus Lupins also contain vitamin A, B vitamins, and vitamin E. Lupins are a nutritionally dense feed option that can be utilized to lower starch in the equine diet or to replace other common feed ingredients for those horses that experience sensitivities to certain allergens.
All Hygain® feeds and ration balancers contain a highly stable, biologically active form of natural vitamin E (d-ɑ-tocopherol). Natural vitamin E protects cells from free radical damage while also supporting normal circulatory and neuromuscular functions. The natural form of vitamin E is preferentially absorbed by the body over synthetic sources. With pasture being the most abundant source of vitamin E in the equine diet, a formula with natural vitamin E is essential for horses who are not on full-time pasture.
Prebiotic fibers promote a healthy gut flora by providing nourishment to beneficial microbes in the digestive tract of the horse, particularly the hindgut. These microbes are responsible for breaking down fiber and producing volatile fatty acids that the horse can use for energy. A healthy gut microflora helps to discourage the growth of harmful microbes and promotes a more stable gut environment for an overall healthier horse.
Probiotics are direct fed (live) microbials that stimulate the activity of good bacteria in the horse’s digestive tract. The addition of probiotics to equine diets improves fiber digestion, immune response, and can support maintainenance of an appropriate pH for a healthy digestive tract.
Hygain® RBO® Equine Performance Oil is a blend of pure rice bran oil containing essential fatty acids and natural antioxidants formulated for all equines. This unique oil contains natural vitamin E and aids as a carrier for fat-soluble vitamins. Added rice bran oil promotes a shiny coat and increases cool burning energy in the diet without promoting excitability.
Selenium has antioxidant functions as a component of the glutathione peroxidase enzyme complex, which scavenges free radicals to limit oxidative stress in the body. The organic form of selenium, selenium yeast, has greater absorption and retention in the body when compared to inorganic forms. Through preferential uptake in the body, selenium yeast plays a critical role in optimal functioning of the muscular and nervous systems, in addition to its importance in immune system function.

Feeding Tips

Hygain® Release® is a soy-free high energy feed. Release® is formulated to provide a palatable supply of energy and nutrients at a higher feeding rate for horses that require more calories due to intense work or body condition.

Horses in full work will require 7-14 lbs of Hygain® Release® per day. Feeding rate should be adjusted according to workload. Reduce intake on rest days or if workload has been decreased or interrupted.

Hygain® Release® should be introduced to your horse’s diet gradually. Adjust intake according to pregnancy and lactation status, age, breed, growth rate, body condition, work load, and pasture/hay availability and quality.

The combination of Hygain® feeds with a quality forage is suitable for most horses. However, it is always recommended that you seek professional assistance from your veterinarian and our nutrition team.

  1. Introduce Hygain® Release® to your horse’s diet gradually over a 7-10 day period.
  2. Feed by weight, not by volume.
  3. Feed a minimum of 1% of your horse’s body weight daily as roughage.
  4. Free choice salt should be offered at all times.
  5. Ensure horses have access to clean water.
  6. Do not add additional vitamins or minerals unless directed by a veterinarian or nutritionist.
  7. Contact Hygain® for additional dietary recommendations and nutritional solutio
